Pull your anchor text report from any major SEO tool and sort by frequency. If commercial keyword phrases dominate over branded and generic anchors, someone optimized the anchor text deliberately.

Links from known PBN patterns

Private blog networks leave patterns. Look for links from sites that share:

Similar hosting providers or IP ranges

Nearly identical site templates or WordPress themes

Thin, generic content with no real audience

No social media presence, no real brand identity

Link profiles that exist solely to link out to a handful of sites

One or two links from low-quality sites is noise. A cluster of links from sites that all look the same, all publish in the same style, and all link to the same group of domains is a network.

Paid link footprints

Hidden text and CSS tricks

Run suspect pages through Copyscape to check for near-duplicate content across the web. Scraped content is easier to spot; it’s often lifted wholesale from another source with minimal modification.

Mass AI-generated content without editorial oversight

Check for manual actions

Log into Google Search Console and navigate to Security & Manual Actions. If Google has already identified violations, you’ll see them listed here with specific descriptions. A manual action means a human reviewer at Google flagged your site. It won’t resolve on its own.

Address toxic backlinks

If your backlink audit reveals manipulative links, your first step is requesting removal from the linking sites. For links you can’t get removed, Google’s disavow tool lets you tell Google to ignore specific links or entire domains. This is a targeted process, not something to rush.
